Awarded the Talent Recruitment Awards in Technological Innovation

Last Saturday, November 27, the award ceremony for the Talent Recruitment Awards in Technological Innovation, in its first edition, was held at La Nave, an innovation space of the Madrid City Council.

The event was attended by Ángel Niño, delegate councilor of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Area of the Madrid City Council and Fernando Herrero, general director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship of the Madrid City Council.

The Madrid City Council, in its interest in promoting innovation in the city of Madrid, has launched in this year 2021 the first call for the Talent Acquisition Awards in Technological Innovation.

With this award, the Madrid City Council seeks to give visibility to the innovative talent of university students and doctors who have completed their studies or defended their theses in Madrid.

 Best doctoral thesis awards

• Best thesis with potential for business creation went to Victor Sebastian Perez, 'Drug discovery in infectious diseases: target-based and ligand-based approaches'
• Most innovative thesis in new technologies went to Daniel Martinez from Rioja del Nido, 'New reflectarray antenna configurations to generate multi-beam coverage in Ka band from geostationary satellites'
• Best thesis on legal or ethical aspects related to new technologies went to Elena Gil Gonzalez, 'The legitimate interest in the processing of massive personal data'

 Best Master's Thesis Awards

• Best job with business creation potential went to David Fabra Notary, 'Metal complexes of palladium (II) containing bioactive units'
• Most innovative work in new technologies went to Alicia Pose Diez de la Lastra, 'Combining augmented reality and 3D printing to improve surgical flow: smartphone app and clinical evaluation'
• Best work in legal or ethical aspects related to new technologies went to César Augusto Fontanillo Perez, 'Passive brain-computer interfaces based on electroencephalography techniques in the wellness sector'

 Honorable mentions doctoral theses

• Best technological innovation and its applications to biomedical specialties Angel Garcia Aldea, 'Pathophysiology of MCT8 deficiency: studies in humans and mice'
• Best technological innovation applicable to the services of the city of Madrid Carlos Ruiz de Leon Gomez, 'Development and optimization of OSCAR® technology for the treatment of effluents with a high organic load'

 Accésits master's thesis

• Best technological innovation related to the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences for Irene Castro Fernandez, 'Optomechanical microdisk-based sensors for biological applications'
• Best technological innovation applicable to the services of the city of Madrid for Asier Goñi Urtiaga,'Biochar as a structuring agent in composting substrates. A viable alternative in green roofs?'

Each of the prizes for doctoral theses was endowed with 2,500 euros and their corresponding second prizes, with 1,000 euros. The awarded master's thesis received 1,500 euros and each of the second prizes in this category, 500 euros.

The jury was made up of six members and included renowned Spanish scientists and businessmen with a recognized track record in the field of technological innovation: Da. Asunción Gómez Pérez, professor, vice-rector for research, innovation and doctorate, director of the Ontology Engineering Group, Polytechnic University of Madrid, Mr. Lluis Montoliu José, Research Professor at the CSIC, president of the Ethics Committee, National Center for Biotechnology, Da. Paloma Domingo García, astrophysicist, deputy director of the FGCSIC, Mr. Jaime Rodríguez Lagunas, director of Applied Intelligence Iberia, Accenture, Mr. Jesús García Herrero, professor, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, Carlos III University and Mr. Luis Miguel Bergasa Pascual, professor at the University of Alcalá, coordinator of the Robotics Research Group of Services and Technologies for Road Safety.

168 applications were submitted. The number of applications submitted by women accounted for 41% of the total. In turn, 44% of the applications have been submitted to the Doctoral Thesis category and 74% to the “Most Innovative Project in New Technologies” category.

The subject addressed by the candidates in their theses and master's thesis has been very broad. The applications for Artificial Intelligence stand out in the most diverse fields, among others: teaching, IoT, autonomous driving and social networks; theses in applied physics and theoretical physics, studies of new materials and their applications and the fight against cancer, Alzheimer's and ALS.

The candidates have completed their doctoral or master's studies mainly at the Autonomous University, at the Polytechnic University, at the Complutense University, at the University of Alcalá, at the Carlos III University and at the Juan Carlos I University.
